Matt Reeves’ The Batman is officially flying into theaters in June of 2021, but it’ll be doing so without Ben Affleck.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. announced on Wednesday (January 30) that it had finally set a date for the next installment of their Batman franchise.

The film, which will be written and directed by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes helmer Matt Reeves, will officially be flying into theaters on June 29, 2021.

News of the film’s official release date also came with confirmation that Ben Affleck won’t in fact be returning to reprise his role as the caped crusader.

Originally Affleck, who portrayed Bruce Wayne in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League, was set to serve as director and co-writer for WB’s next installment of the Batman franchise.

Reeves, however, took over the project back in 2017 after Affleck chose to step down from helming the superhero flick.

Since taking over Reeves has completely rewritten the script for The Batman, which will now reportedly focus on a much younger Bruce Wayne.

The decision to age Bruce down likely has a lot to do with why Affleck will no longer be portraying Batman on the big screen. At the same time, his decision to pass on the cape to the next actor tapped for the role could also be due to scheduling conflicts.

For his part, Affleck seems excited to see Reeves’ film come to life. Shortly after news of the release date broke, the actor took to Twitter to share the news.

We’ll be looking forward to seeing who Reeves chooses to take up the mantle now that Affleck is out.
