Matt Damon is finally set to return to play Jason Bourne in the Bourne Identity franchise with director Paul Greengrass.

Jason Bourne will finally be back after a seven year hiatus. While there was a Bourne film released in 2012 starring Jeremy Renner, he played another character, which leaves Damon’s Jason Bourne character alive and well.

Deadline reports that director Paul Greengrass is teaming up with Damon once again for their fourth Bourne film. Despite the fact that Greengrass said there was “no place else for the character to go creatively,” it seems they’ve finally found a script they want to film.

Matt Damon has always said he was interested in returning to the character if the right script came up, and it seems he’s happy with the current script for Jason Bourne’s fourth outing.

The goal is reportedly to have the film hit theaters on July 16, 2016, which Universal had previously assigned to another untitled Bourne film that didn’t include Damon returning to his role as the beloved super-spy.

In the end, the Bourne trilogy was a massive money maker, and Matt Damon may be looking to make a film that reunites him with the fans that started his rise to A-list status.

The duo have proven to be successful in the past, so we’re excited to hear that Greengrass has finally okayed a script. This does mean that Avengers actor Jeremy Renner’s sequel will be put on hold, but it wasn’t as widely received as when Damon was involved.

Director Justin Lin was set to direct the sequel with Renner starring, but he’s now directing the second season of HBO’s hit series True Detective. So, this may work out for all parties involved, with Renner being busy with his work at Marvel.

Excited to see Matt Damon reprising his role as Jason Bourne?
