Backlash from Ben Affleck being cast as Batman in Man of Steel’s sequel has died down, and now his actor/best friend is backing director Zack Snyder’s choice to cast the actor as the next Caped Crusader.

Matt Damon likes to speak his mind about public backlash and he was bound to defend the recent casting of his best friend being cast as the next Batman. In a recent interview with Times of India, Damon says that he “thinks it will be great. It will be terrific.”

He said that he knows there are a lot of people giving Affleck a hard time on the internet but he thinks it’s funny because it’s not like “he’s playing King Lear. It’s Batman! Certainly within his skill set.”

Damon continued defending the decision, saying that if anyone saw Ben Affleck’s latest films, Argo or The Town, they would know that he’s more than capable of playing Batman, which he says isn’t nearly as difficult as the characters he’s played in his recent films.

He started jumping a little out of his comfort zone though and said, “Batman just sits there with his cowl over his head and whispers in a kinda gruff voice at people.”

While this is somewhat true, he followed up by discussing the real task, which is playing Bruce Wayne. Damon says, “Bruce Wayne is the more challenging part of the role, and Ben will be great at that.”

On rumors that he may be playing Robin in any future Batman films, Damons says that “I am a little older than Ben. I never saw Robin as older than Batman.” He did say that someone sent him a picture of his face photoshopped onto Robin’s body along with Ben’s face on Batman’s body and he thought it was hilarious. But that “it’s safe to say I won’t be Robin.”

It’s somewhat expected that Damon would defend his longtime friend and film partner, it’s nice to see him speaking out about unwarranted online backlash about something none of us have seen Affleck do yet. Damon probably knows what Affleck is capable of, much more than the rest of us.

After the massive backlash, it was later revealed why Affleck took the role, which essentially guarantees that Ben Affleck will be partners with Warner Bros. for the foreseeable future in terms of acting and directing future films.

We’re optimistic that if the script is solid, Ben is certainly capable of pulling off the difficult role along with Henry Cavill, who will reprise his role as Superman. Batman VS Superman’s release date is set for July 7, 2015.
