A new Master and Commander movie is officially on the horizon and could soon be sailing toward the silver screen.

According to Deadline, 20th Century is currently in the process of developing a prequel to its critically acclaimed adaptation, Master and Commander.

The original movie bowed back in 2003 and was based on one of the books in author Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey-Maturin series.

Set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, the movie followed the story of Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe)— a British captain who pushes the crew on his ship to their breaking point while in hot pursuit of a French war vessel sailing around South America.

The plan for 20th Century’s next film would be to have it serve as a prequel to 2003’s Oscar nominated Master and Commander. Sources close to the project say that it would center on a much younger Captain Aubrey as he’s given his first command. In addition it would also explore the origins of Aubrey’s friendship with naval surgeon, Stephen Maturin (played in the 2003 film by Paul Bettany).

Behind the camera, the studio has already found a scribe for its Master and Commander prequel in Patrick Ness, who previously penned the script for A Monster Calls.

Yet to be determined is who will serve as director on the project. In addition, the prequel is still in the early stages of development meaning that there’s also no word on who might star as younger versions of both Aubrey and Maturin.
