Many gamers returned from the midnight launch of Mass Effect 3 last night only to be met with disappointment when they found out the game is unable to use save data from Mass Effect 2 imported from the cloud.

EA has confirmed that the epic end to Commander Shepard’s trilogy does not accept cloud save data from Mass Effect 2. Local save files moved to another console across the cloud are also unusable.

In order for the save import to work, you must use the original hard drive it was saved on.

The publisher has released a statement saying they understand “this may be a great setback to those impacted who have been following the Mass Effect franchise over the years. We thank you for your patience.”

Even if you are able to import your prior saves, some on Bioware forums have complained that their character is not importing correctly, though this problem only appears to of the cosmetic variety and the game data seems to be in tact.

For a series like Mass Effect in which a draw to many players is the customization of their own trilogy through their decisions, this is a big problem. Let’s hope EA and Bioware can find a fix for this problem sooner rather than later.
