The Eternals movie has found its director in critically acclaimed The Rider’s Chloé Zhao.

As confirmed in April 2018 by President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, The Eternals has now moved from the early development stages, and is starting to pick up steam at the studio.

The Hollywood Reporter first announced that director Chloé Zhao — whose movie, The Rider, won the C.I.C.A.E. Award at Cannes Film Festival — had landed the directing gig on The Eternals. Zhao was also in the running to direct the Black Widow solo movie, but that job ultimately went to Cate Shortland.

According to THR, The Eternals will feature “super-powered and near-immortal beings known as Eternals and a more monstrous off-shoot known as the Deviants that were created by cosmic beings known as Celestials.”

While the wider plot details are being kept under wraps, sources told THR that one storyline involves “the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans.”

In the scope of the Marvel Cinematic universe, we have already been introduced to a Celestial in the form of Ego, the living planet, who was introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.

Likewise, we may have already met an Eternal, should the MCU follow the comics. Thanos, who wreaked havoc upon the Avengers and allies in Infinity War, was retconned as part of an Eternal splinter-group living on Titan when Jack Kirby returned to Marvel.

No release date has been given for The Eternals, only that it will follow Avengers 4. Matthew and Ryan Firpo wrote the script for the movie.
