Two months ago Ant-Man’s future was in question, but after hiring director Peyton Reed, Marvel’s pint-sized superhero film starts production today.

Ant-Man director Peyton Reed has announced via Twitter that the film has started production. Reed was hired after the film’s previous director Edgar Wright left the project over a “difference in creative vision.”

Marvel has sent out a press release concerning Ant-Man’s production starting:

“Marvel Studios began principal photography today in San Francisco, California, on its newest Super Hero franchise Marvel’s “Ant-Man.” The film brings one of Marvel comics’ original founding members of The Avengers into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The production also shoots on location in Atlanta, Georgia, which serves as the base for the film’s production.

“Set for release in the United States on July 17, 2015, the film is directed by Peyton Reed (“Bring it On,” “The Break-Up”) and stars Paul Rudd (“I Love You Man,” “Role Models”) as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man, and Michael Douglas (“Behind The Candelabra,” “Wall Street”) as his mentor Dr. Hank Pym and Evangeline Lilly (“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” “Lost”) as Hope Van Dyne, daughter of Hank Pym.”

Marvel also revealed the first plot synopsis for Ant-Man before Comic-Con: “Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.”

Something we noticed in the press release was that actor John Slattery, who played Tony Stark’s father Howard, will be in the film. While actor Dominic Cooper played Howard Stark in Captain America: The First Avenger, Slattery played the older Howard Stark in Iron Man 2.

Other just-announced additions to the cast according to today’s press release include Judy Greer, Bobby Cannavale, and T.I.

Writer Adam McKay will be contributing to the film’s script as well, who was asked to direct the film during Marvel’s attempt to replace Ant-Man’s original director Edgar Wright.

While Peyton Reed begins his journey today, we hope that Ant-Man does end up becoming a worthy adaptation for Marvel’s film universe. We’re excited about Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas’ involvement and after Comic-Con it was good to hear that Evangeline Lilly would be starring in the film as well.

Many thought Marvel made a mistake by rewriting director Edgar Wright’s script, but it’s exciting to finally see the adaptation’s filming begin.
