One of the consequences of the recent Marvel Studios shake-up has been the promotion of visual effects chief Victoria Alonso.

We’ve been following the behind-the-scenes shuffles at Marvel Studios with great interest, as Kevin Feige’s increased autonomy and its closer merge with Disney is sure to affect the creative vision for the MCU.

This latest change has us all kinds of excited: Variety reports that Victoria Alonso, previously executive producer and executive VP of VFX, has been promoted to executive vice president of physical production.

This means that Alonso, a Buenos Aires native, will now be overseeing, “All physical production, post-production and production technical operations for Marvel.”

Variety notes that she is one of the few women to ever hold the title of physical production chief.

So what does this mean for Marvel Studios going forward? It’s obviously too soon to tell, but fans bemoaning the lack of female voices — both in front of and behind the camera — should take heart.

Alonso has been very outspoken about her desire to see more women enter the visual effects field, and when asked last year when we could expect a female superhero film from Marvel, she said, “If it were up to me, it would be today.”

Speaking to Digital Spy both about DC and Marvel’s plans for female superhero movies, she elaborated, “the success of superheroes, whether ours or others, is success for all of us. But I will be honored to be part of a woman leading the way.”

“Please remember that it’s OK to allow the ladies in. They’re smart, they’re talented. They bring a balance that you need,” Alonso said at the time. And clearly, Marvel is listening.

Marvel’s first female-centric superhero movie, Captain Marvel, is set to premiere on November 2, 2018.
