Spider-Man director Jon Watts has been chatting to Empire about Marvel’s plans to reinvent the classic character.

Marvel’s Spider-Man reboot movies will follow a high-school aged Peter Parker, who has already been bitten by a radioactive spider.

In a new interview with Empire Magazine, director Jon Watts reveals the exact age of our hero: when we first see him, Peter will be only 15 years old.

“I love the idea of making a coming-of-age high school movie,” Watts says. “We’re really going to see Peter Parker in high school and get deeper into that side of it. He’s just 15 now.”

Of course Marvel’s Spidey of choice, Tom Holland, is already 19, and will be 20 by the time filming for the first Spider-Man movie begins in Summer 2016.

Despite the age discrepancy, Watts has high praise for the young actor. “Tom was pretty perfect,” he says. “He’s very athletic. He can actually do a backflip! If he didn’t already capture the spirit of the character, with that on top the kid is Spider-Man.”

Finally, Watts hints that Peter won’t experience the formative trauma which launched his crime fighting career in both of the previous movie series.

“There are only so many times you can kill Uncle Ben,” he says, disappointing all fans who may or may not have been keeping score.

Marvel’s Spider-Man premieres on July 28, 2017. The character, played by Tom Holland, will make his debut in next year’s Captain America: Civil War. Early reports from filming indicates that he’ll play a pivotal role in the movie, fighting a key Avenger.
