A Runaways script has been on the table at Marvel since before the Avengers took the world by storm. Now, it’s heading to series at Hulu.

You’d be forgiven for not knowing about Marvel’s Runaways — the title largely flew under the radar as part of the (now obsolete) Tsunami imprint.

Though initially popular enough to shift from its originally intended run as a mini-series to a full-fledged title of its own, it came to an end shortly after creators Brian K. Vaughan (Saga) and Adrian Alphona (Ms. Marvel, Uncanny X-Force) left the series.

Runaways itself followed a group of six diverse teenagers who, after discovering their parents make up the ranks of the villainous organization The Pride, do as the title suggests — they run away.

As Nico Minoru, Karolina Dean, Molly Hayes, Chase Stein, Alex Wilder, and Gertrude Yorkes lay low to avoid discovery by their parents, they learn more about who they are and forge a close-knit family of their own — with each other.

“We’ve known the Runaways’ story would make great television,” Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television said of the announcement. “And being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie — who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience — write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable.”

Josh and Stephanie are, of course, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of Gossip Girls fame, and they will be Executive Producing and co-showrunning the series.

“I’m a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn’t be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian’s characters to life,” Schwartz said, with Savage adding, “Josh and I can’t wait to get to work for Marvel and Hulu.”

Also producing on the series will be Jeph Loeb, Jim Chory (Daredevil, Jessica Jones) and Fake Empire’s Lis Rowinski.

An episode order was not announced by Marvel or Hulu today, nor when we should expect the series to hit the streaming service — but we imagine those details will shortly be forthcoming.
