New reports suggest that Spider-Man may be joining Marvel, but that Andrew Garfield won’t be included, as they plan to recast the character and start from scratch.

Sony is having some trouble lately with their recent database hack revealing salaries, emails, secret meetings, and much more. Now a new report has Marvel recasting Spider-Man if they take over the character’s future. Despite having one of the most popular superheroes in the world in their portfolio, Sony can’t seem to figure out what to do with him.

Andrew Garfield reportedly has a contract for a third Spider-Man film, but the new report says that Sony plans on creating a deal with Marvel that would allow them to recast the character. There are no plans to do another origins film, though, as Marvel believes audiences have grown tired of Spider-Man origin tales.

Sony had already pushed The Amazing Spider-Man 3’s release date back to 2018, which was surprising enough, but these new reports suggest that Sony is struggling to figure out what to do with their most popular properties, and may look to create productions with other companies in the future.

Sony certainly needs to do something with the character, as Andrew Garfield even revealed he was unsure of the franchise’s future, but it would be very exciting if Sony would be willing to let Spider-Man join his fellow Avengers.

It’s a shame, if we’re honest, as Garfield has always been a major Spider-Man fan, and he’s said it would be “epic” if the two studios were able to work together. Despite his film’s shortfalls, most agree that he is a fairly solid Spider-Man. Just a few too many liberties have been taken with the Peter Parker side of the character, which we imagine could easily be fixed with some script improvements.

We would love to see Spider-Man in an Avengers film, but we know through recent leaked emails that Sony was attempting to get Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, but those negotiations reportedly fell through.

On a related note, the report also suggests that the Venom and Sinister Six spinoffs are still being worked on, but that a Marvel Spider-Man would be started with an entirely “clean slate.” Either way, Sony has to make a move with Spidey, and we have to believe his future is the brightest in Marvel’s capable hands.

Who would you like to see replace Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man if that’s what it took for Marvel to take over the superhero’s future films?
