Marvel has chosen to sit out San Diego Comic Con for the first time since 2015, but Marvel and Netflix’s Iron Fist will be appearing at the convention.

It’s been a big year for the MCU with Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War releasing. There are huge questions surrounding the future of the MCU, the fate of our favorite heroes, and the new faces joining the ranks. Usually, we would have gotten at least a few breadcrumbs of hints about what’s to come at the MCU Hall H panel at San Diego Comic Con, but the comic book movie giant has opted to bow out of the convention this year.

However, Deadline reports that it doesn’t mean Marvel is out of the convention entirely. It was recently announced that Marvel and Netflix’s show Iron Fist will be showing up to greet fans in Hall H during the convention.

Of course, Iron Fist season 1 wasn’t necessarily a huge fan favorite of the Marvel Netflix shows, but with the show’s upcoming second season, Marvel and Netflix wanted to utilize SDCC to promote the show. Danny Rand (Finn Jones) also is set to make a brief cameo in season 2 of Luke Cage, which is set to release on Netflix on June 22.

It is possible more Netflix heroes could show up at SDCC as well. There are talks of creating a panel for both the Punisher and Daredevil, as both shows have shot their second season, though a premiere date hasn’t been released.

It’s an interesting switch, benching the MCU heroes and highlighting only the Netflix heroes (especially one so intensely debated among fans like Iron Fist). While most of the Netflix heroes are beloved, a great deal of the fandom focus is on the MCU in this transitional period.

It was widely publicized that Marvel released behind-the-scenes footage of their upcoming film, Captain Marvel at CineEurope, and with Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 coming down the pipeline in addition to the intensely anticipated Avengers 4, it’s an odd time to bow out of one of the biggest events in fandom.

While we know there is a larger plan at work here, it’s a shame for SDCC to happen without a huge MCU panel. San Diego Comic Con is from July 19-22, so we will have to wait and see exactly how the Marvel presence (or lack thereof) impacts the convention.
