Marvel’s The Inhumans is coming to ABC — but first, an IMAX theater near you.

The new ABC series will explore new stories of the Inhuman royal family and Black Bolt. Presumably, The Inhumans will cover a separate territory from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which has folded the empowered humans into its narrative for two seasons.

According to Marvel, the first two episodes of The Inhumans will debut as a feature film in IMAX studios in Sept. 2017. The series will then air weekly in the fall on ABC. Currently, there have been no announcements regarding the creative team.

IMAX is partnering with Marvel to produce and promote The Inhumans, a new step for the film company. The partnership will take some of the financial burden off of ABC, and add a new angle to promotion. ABC, Marvel, and IMAX representatives are all expressly excited by the new development.

“This unprecedented alliance represents a bold, innovative approach to launching great TV content for a worldwide audience,” says ABC president Ben Sherwood. “It highlights Disney|ABC’s unrelenting commitment to finding new and creative ways to showcasing our very best programming and increasing global engagement and reach.”

“We’re happy to see this unique deal come together, working with our partners,” says Marvel’s Dan Buckley. “In an ever-changing world of distribution and consumption, it’s very exciting to be part of a groundbreaking initiative that takes us to the forefront of this evolution.”

And after all, evolution is what The Inhumans are all about.

Update: According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Inhumans will run for eight episodes, all of which will be filmed with IMAX cameras. In addition, IGN posits that the series will not impact the fate of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
