If you were wondering what Marvel has on the horizon that isn’t The Avengers or the inevitable sequels to Iron Man, Captain America or Thor, now you know.

According to TwitchFilm.com, Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (writers of Sahara and the upcoming Conan the Barbarian) have just turned in their script to Marvel who will begin “moving forward” with the project by assembling a short list of directors.

Twitch has learned that Oppenheimer and Donnelly have now turned in their script and Marvel is pushing forward with the property. Marvel has drafted a short list of directors to approach on the title and is forwarding the current script to each to try and sign someone up to ‘oversee continued development’.

There have been whispers for some time of a Doctor Strange film coming into production (including a “confirmation” from Stan Lee last year that Marvel refused to acknowledge) and he is a fan favorite, but many fans claimed that he would be “too unreal” to be picked up by Marvel studios.

Well, if the Asgardian realm in Thor and the Cosmic Cube in Captain America (not to mention a certain gamma-ray exposed man who turns into a giant green monster instead of dying a slow and painful death via radiation poisoning) weren’t too unreal for mainstream audiences, then Doctor Strange should be just fine.

For those unfamiliar with his mythos, Dr. Strange begins as a genius surgeon who loses the use of his hands in a tragic accident.

He consults a witch-doctor (appropriately named The Ancient One) to regain the use of his hands and begins to learn the mystic arts from him.

The character has evolved over the years, but after taking hold of a number of magical objects he rises to become the “Sorceror Supreme” of the cosmos.

There’s no word yet on if they plan on doing an origin story or what form we’ll see the doctor in. His look has ranged from youthful to sagely to fantastical to goofy. Our hope is that we get the Doctor Strange from the Illuminati series (pictured above).

So what do you think? Who should direct Dr. Strange for Marvel? Who should play Dr. Strange?

We’re going to go ahead and say that Disney won’t be able to resist plugging Johnny Depp into the lead role, but we may be jumping the gun with that. As for a director, David Lynch or Terry Gilliam would fit perfectly into Dr. Strange’s universe!

Thanks to ComicBookMovie for the heads up!
