Marvel is looking at Ava DuVernay to direct one of their quote-unquote diverse superhero movies, likely Captain Marvel or Black Panther.

Selma director Ava DuVernay is reportedly being courted by Marvel for one of their upcoming superhero movies, writes The Wrap late Tuesday night.

According to inside sources, DuVernay is most likely being considered for Black Panther, Marvel’s first (and so far only) superhero movie with an African-American lead.

Marvel is allegedly intent on hiring an African-American filmmaker for Black Panther, and a female director for Captain Marvel. And DuVernay certainly ticks all the right boxes.

If DuVernay signs on for either Black Panther or Captain Marvel, she would not only be the studio’s first ever African-American director, but also its first female director.

While Patty Jenkins (who is now set to direct DC’s Wonder Woman) was originally named director of Thor: The Dark World, she left the project citing creative differences, and was eventually replaced by Alan Taylor.

Diversifying its talent pool should certainly be high on Marvel’s priority list right now.

In their initial report, The Wrap notes that news of Marvel’s talks with DuVernay broke on the same day that the American Civil Liberties Union asked state and federal agencies to investigate Hollywood’s hiring practices at major studios, citing “rampant and intentional gender discrimination in recruiting and hiring female directors.”

In related news, Marvel is allegedly looking to Angelina Jolie to direct Captain Marvel. But as the studio’s first female-led superhero film isn’t scheduled until 2018, there’s plenty of time for them to shop around.

Ava DuVernay’s Selma was nominated for several 2015 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
