Martin Scorsese shocked film fans and critics alike when he announced that he would be releasing Hugo in 3D, but reception to both the film and the 3D was near-universally positive. Speaking at CinemaCon, the Oscar winning director told attendees that he would have liked to have shot all of his films in 3D – including Taxi Driver and Raging Bull!

As part of a panel with fellow director Ang Lee (Hulk) discussing the future of 3D and the benefits of the technology for the medium, Scorsese spoke about his recently discovered love of the third dimension. “I would have practically done all my films in 3D,” the esteemed director stated. “There is something that 3D gives to the picture that takes you into another land and you stay there and it’s a good place to be.” The Hollywood Reporter even noted that Scorsese included critically-acclaimed classics Taxi Driver and Raging Bull (both of which are very gritty, often dark films) in his list of films that could have been improved by the technology. This may come as a surprise to some Scorsese fans, as many experts consider 3D to be nothing more than a money-making gimmick used by studios.

Martin Scorsese is currently working on The Wolf of Wall Street with longtime collaborator, Leonardo DiCaprio.

Do you think films like Taxi Driver would have been improved by using 3D, or is the technology a novelty that is doomed to fade out?
