Martin Freeman is one of the (many) new additions to the MCU who’ll make their debut in Captain America: Civil War. But who is he playing?

Marvel’s Ant-Man just hit cinemas, which means that Phase 2 is officially complete.

Phase 3 will open with Captain America: Civil War, which is set to shake up the MCU right from the offset.

Not only will we (likely) be introduced to Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and the new Spider-Man (Tom Holland), but a slew of other new characters will be debuting in the third (and reportedly final) Captain America-centric movie.

One of the new players is Martin Freeman, who recently gave Bad Taste some hints about his character’s identity.

Freeman revealed that his character works for the American government, explaining, “He works in conjunction with the superheroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes’ power.”

In Captain America: Civil War, former allies Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) will find themselves on opposite sides of a major conflict, which involves the government and their desire to regulate and monitor the country’s copious superheroes.

Freeman, because he’s Martin Freeman (!), is likely a big player in this conflict, the frontman who will be trying to ally himself with (and/or combat) the Avengers and the various supernaturally-endowed vigilantes set to pop up in the movie.

“You’re not quite sure which side he’s on,” Freeman teases of his character. “It looks a little bit like he’s playing one game when actually he’s playing another.”

Just like there likely won’t be a clear wrong and right side when the Avengers start choosing sides, “you don’t know whether [my character is] good or bad,” Freeman says. “I like that area that isn’t black or white, I like the greys, because I think there’s just more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line.”

Recently, Civil War star Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) teased a fun new piece of promotional artwork showing Captain America and Iron Man, and asking fans to choose their side.

With Anthony and Joe Russo at the helm, we have every confidence that the conflict between our beloved characters will be full of ambiguity and uncertainty.
