In a recent interview, Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo reveals that The Avengers: Age of Ultron’s cast will be headed to Comic-Con together and may reveal the film’s first footage.

Collider recently sat down with Mark Ruffalo to discuss his role in The Avengers: Age of Ultron and discussed the possibility of a solo Hulk movie, as well as where he thinks motion capture is in terms of advancing the technology in the future.

When the Hulk actor was asked how he feels about seeing the massive crowds at Comic-Con, he said, “Yeah, we’re gonna go out there. We’re all flying, we’re flying from London. We’re working. We’re shooting. We’re gonna stop and get on a plane and go to Comic Con together. It’s gonna be amazing.”

When Ruffalo was asked if he thought we might see some Avengers: Age of Ultron footage, he jokingly teased, “There might be some cool new Hulk, Hulk-o, Hulk-o-phobia, Hulk-o-phernalia. Hulk-a-phernalia!”

After being asked about how he first signed on for The Avengers, he went on to explain the story of how he didn’t want to sign on for the film without reading the script. He said, “See, the problem with those movies is they don’t have a script when they’re casting you and that was really problematic for me.”

He explained that he had made a promise to himself that he would never sign on to a film before there was a script and said, “I’ve been able to stay pretty true to that, but that was a particularly, you know, rare occasion.”

He revealed that even Robert Downey Jr. reached out to him, when he wasn’t willing to sign on, and Ruffalo asked RDJ, “‘Me?’ You know, ‘Why me?’ The actor wasn’t ready to join without reading a script, but Downey Jr. said, “‘You know, let’s do this,’ and I [asked], ‘Well, is there a script?’ ‘No, we don’t have a script. We’re not gonna give you anything.”

So while Ruffalo was very skeptical of signing on to a nine picture deal without reading a script, he ended up getting director Joss Whedon to “float” him 20 pages of the script that were just about Bruce Banner. Ruffalo says that once he was able to see where they were taking the character that he was more than willing to jump on the Avengers train.

He did say that he was worried about what would happen once Joss Whedon wasn’t writing the scripts for him anymore, as he has multiple films left to go, but what’s interesting is now that we know he has a nine-picture deal, he will most likely end up having a solo Hulk film.

Ruffalo did seem to be a bit concerned about the future of the Hulk character, when Whedon wasn’t at the helm, but we imagine Whedon will still be monitoring any possible solo movies that Banner would be in.

Although, Ruffalo did say that The Hulk is a “tough nut to crack,” since he’s the only person in the group that doesn’t really want to be there. Everyone else is somewhat game to play their part as a superhero, but Bruce doesn’t “want” to be the Hulk, he just “is.”

It’s definitely an interesting way to look at the character and it’s clear that he and Whedon have done an enormous amount of research concerning Hulk.

When asked about if he was enjoying the motion capture aspect of the character, he seemed to light up about the fun he was having. Ruffalo said, “We’re a little bit behind on the motion capture technology as far as facial recognition in real time. Now we have, when I put on my motion capture suit, I look in front of me and there’s me as The Hulk. There’s The Hulk.”

He says that every time he moves, he can see the Hulk making the same move, so he has this very immediate feedback which is “like almost looking into a mirror, but instead of seeing myself, I see The Hulk.”

But he did reveal that he doesn’t believe they have reached the same point with the facial recognition, but says that by the time a solo Hulk film would come out, he hopes that the facial recognition would be at the same level as the motion capture abilities.

Ruffalo said, “If we do another Hulk – that technology will be in real time and once that happens, there’d be no limit to what you can do creatively as far as your physical being is concerned.”

He also said that he’d been working with world re-known motion capture actor Andy Serkis, who can next be seen as Caesar in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. He of course started this revolution of motion capture by playing Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

We’re very excited to hear that The Avengers: Age of Ultron cast will be at this year’s Comic-Con and Ruffalo certainly doesn’t disappoint when revealing new information concerning the film. We look forward to asking him a few questions when we hit Comic-Con later this year.
