Rick Riordan, author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, is set to release his next installation in Heroes of Olympus, Mark of Athena, on October 2. In anticipation, he revealed new artwork and information on a character we can expect in the book: Nemesis, goddess of revenge.

According to his blog, Nemesis can “shape-shift into any imposing figure you can imagine, if you’re her target.” He sets her up as someone the demigods won’t ever want to run into. He also mentions that however intimidating she is, the goddess can be bargained with. Leo, apparently, will find this out first hand. But what will it cost him to do so?

While we haven’t specifically seen Nemesis in any previous books yet, we have met one of her children, Ethan. He played a pivotal role in The Last Olympian and we’re sure mention of this will come up when the group meets her in Mark of Athena. The real question is whether she’ll put the blame on Percy for his death. That could cause a major problem for our heroes, especially if they’re short on time!

We don’t know too much more about her right now, but it should be noted that she’s also the goddess of balance. In the books, she carries a whip (as seen on her hip in the picture), and rides a motorcycle (in the background). We also noticed a fortune cookie in her hand. How do you think that’ll play into the story?

What do you think of this new artwork? Any guesses as to who the other characters might be? You can see their silhouettes on Hyperion’s official page for the series. We’ll make sure to bring you each new character art as it’s released so you can discuss and speculate in the comments below! The next one is set to release in about a week.
