Much has been said about Star Wars and sexuality over the past few weeks.

For starters, Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams was recently asked to comment on the possibility of gay characters existing in the galaxy. While he didn’t confirm that one exists in The Force Awakens (though we believe the filmmakers are setting up a certain Poe Dameron to be gay), he did suggest that it’s possible.

“When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters. It’s about inclusivity,” Abrams said to The Daily Beast. “So of course. To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”

He’s right! It’s a huge, huge world out there. How could there not be any people who aren’t straight?

And now come comments from Mark Hamill who plays Luke Skywalker. As a character whose sexuality and romantic side have never been put forth in the movies, Luke can be whatever viewers want him to be, according to Hamill.

He recently told The Sun, “Fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school… I’m afraid to come out.’ They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”

If we’re interpreting these comments right, Hamill believes that Luke’s sexuality could be an inspiration to viewers who are looking to identify with someone on screen. The possibility of Luke being gay (or whatever you want him to be) has always been there, so it’s the viewer who gets to decide.

No matter Luke’s sexuality, he’s a little pre-occupied with other business as we enter the eighth Star Wars movie. When we finally saw him during The Force Awakens, he was greeting Rey with a mysterious stare. That intriguing scene will open Episode VIII, according to Daisy Ridley.
