American Idol season 13 judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj have announced they will not return to Fox’s singing competition next year.

“W/ global success of “#Beautiful” (#1 in 30+ countries so far) @MariahCarey confirms world tour & says goodbye 2 Idol,” she said in a tweet. Carey was never warmly received on the show by the audience and didn’t click too well with the fellow judges.

Randy Jackson – who’s been with American Idol since the beginning – confirmed his departure a few weeks ago just before the show went off air.

That leaves two judges left who are technically still a part of the show: Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban. Both artists joined American Idol just this year, and neither helped the ratings.

UPDATE: Nicki Minaj has announced she is leaving the show too. That just leaves Keith Urban’s return up in the air.

Rumors in recent weeks have indicated that American Idol is looking to completely shake up the judges panel for the first time in its history, though that plan hasn’t been formally set in stone. Other reports have said that Fox is looking to bring back previous American Idol winners to fill the judging seats. Former winners in contention include Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, and Adam Lambert. We’ve also heard that Fox is looking to shrink the judge’s panel from four to three people at the table like they did in earlier seasons.

Urban has said that he is still unsure if he’s returning or not, so everything seems up in the air. Fox is likely looking for a way to improve ratings for the show after several ratings declines over the past few seasons.
