Margot Robbie is teaming up with Warner Bros. and Mattel to bring Barbie to the big screen.

According to Variety, actress Margot Robbie has officially signed on to star in and co-produce a brand new live-action film about Mattel’s iconic Barbie doll.

Robbie will be producing under her LuckyChap banner and Mattel will be producing under its newly minted Mattel Films banner.

WB’s upcoming Barbie flick marks the first film to be produced under the toy company’s new production company led by producer Robbie Brenner.

In a statement announcing her involvement with the project, Robbie spoke of why she’s excited to be part of the upcoming live-action movie. Specifically, the actress pointed to Barbie’s long history of promote imagination and confidence in young children.

“Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery. Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president,” said Robbie. “I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide. I can’t imagine better partners than Warner Bros., and Mattel to bring this film to the big screen.”

There’s not much information out with regards to what kinds of adventures Barbie will be getting up to in the new live-action movie. One thing we do know, thanks to a statement released by Warner Bros., is that all parties involve hope to “bring Barbie to life on screen in a fresh and relevant way for today’s audiences.”

There’s currently no word on when we can expect Margot Robbie’s upcoming Barbie flick to hit the big screen.
