Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill recently revealed that a Justice League film won’t be happening anytime soon, but that he’s certainly interested in playing Superman if the movie ever gets a release date.

During a recent interview with ABC News, Henry Cavill explained that the Justice League film was not an immediate concern for the actor, and said that, “I don’t think it’s around the corner.”

This isn’t surprising, despite rumors of a 2015 release date, Justice League won’t happen until its superheroes have their own solo success. While Man of Steel has won some fans over, it’s certainly not breaking many box office records. That could change once it’s released in the rest of its foreign markets.

Warner Bros. is hoping to mimic Marvel’s The Avengers, which took in an estimated 1.5 billion worldwide, but the groundwork just isn’t laid out yet. While it feels like they’ve fleshed out Batman and now Superman, the truth is they only have one film under their belts.

Actor Christian Bale won’t be returning to play the caped crusader, so Warner Bros.’ biggest hurdle is recasting Batman, which is a major risk with The Dark Knight Rises having just been released in 2012.

Variety reports that Henry Cavill says it’s difficult to put together a film like Justice League, due to the heroes being somewhat “god-like” in power. He also said that the characters have to be reworked very delicately or it could be a disaster.

Cavill continued saying, “Justice League could be great if done correctly. It’s a very tough one to do because the DC comic heroes are all god-like in their power. So in this real world universe, real-world setting we’re telling our story in, it’s going to be tough to achieve that. It has to be done very delicately with a lot of thought. So, it won’t be right away. I hope it’s not, anyway. It may take some time of building up other movies and other characters and introducing them together in one way or another.”

Despite Cavill’s concerns, he’s certainly willing to be a part of the film, saying, “I think it would be great to do, but I don’t think it’s around the corner.” We share his feelings, and hopefully Warner Bros. does as well. Cavill’s solo film, Man of Steel, has just passed $400 million worldwide.

It’s possible to do a Justice League film, but not by rushing it. As seen with Marvel’s The Avengers, it takes time to develop these characters, and more importantly, to showcase each character individually to moviegoers so that they can become attached to the idea of seeing them all work together.

While Warner Bros. hasn’t said anything official about Justice League, we have heard rumors that a release date was set for 2015.

Director Zack Snyder and writer David. S. Goyer have been rumored to be attached to a Justice League film, but they may be very busy with a Man of Steel sequel.

We imagine Man of Steel’s success is a good starting point for Justice League’s future, but they’ll certainly want to see how they can weave in the other characters into new solo films as well.
