The first trailer for Malcom & Marie is here and it teases a tumultuous relationship between Zendaya and John David Washington.

Zendaya’s next major film role could find the young Emmy Award winner vying for Oscar glory come award show season.

On Friday (January 8), Netflix dropped a stunning black and white trailer for its brand new romance drama, Malcolm & Marie.

Written and directed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, the film finds John David Washington and Zendaya starring as a filmmaker named Malcolm and his girlfriend, Marie.

The film follows the couple as they head home following a celebratory movie premiere. While the night should be one for celebration in which Malcolm awaits news of what is sure to be imminent critical and financial success of his film, it quickly takes a turn for the worse on the personal side of things when it comes to his relationship with Marie.

Specifically, the couple suddenly finds themselves making unplanned revelations about their past relationships which ends up putting the strength of their love to the test.

“Mystery. The unknown. It’s what supports the tension of a relationship— the ‘what if’ factor,” we hear the voice of Marie say over a tense moment. “What if there’s someone who loved them better?”

The film, which debuts via Netflix early next month, made headlines in 2020 for being one of the first features to be written and filmed amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Over the course of production, everyone involved kept the public informed about the precautions being taken to ensure the set stayed safe.

In addition to starring as the titular characters, both Zendaya and Washington serve as executive producers on the project along with Kid Cudi and Yariv Milchan. Also involved is cinematographer Marcell Rev, who worked with Levinson to bring the film to life.

Malcolm & Marie debuts via Netflix on February 5.
