If Downton Abbey continues on past series 6, it may be without Maggie Smith.

The actress said in a new interview this weekend that the sixth outing for Downton Abbey may be its last, and if not, it may be time for Violet Crawley to go.

“They say this is the last one, and I can’t see how it could go on,” she said to The Sunday Times. “I mean, I certainly can’t keep going. To my knowledge, I must be 110 by now. We’re into the late 1920s.”

Smith doesn’t clarify who she’s referring to when she uses “they,” but presumably she’s not referencing tabloids. She’s also right to point out that her character Violet Crawley is at an unrealistically old age. She’s made it this far because Violet is way too popular to die before the series ends.

The actress’ involvement with Downton Abbey has been a hot topic of speculation within the show’s fandom over the past couple years as father time continues to bear down on Smith.

With that said, the actress appears to have no plans to quit acting. “When you’re not working it’s scary, and when you are working it’s scary, because you don’t know if you’ve got the energy to get through the day,” she said to The Times. “But the bleakness of not doing it, and missing out on the friendships that you make, is too much to bear.”

ITV has already renewed Downton Abbey for a sixth series which’ll likely premiere this September in the United Kingdom and early next year in the United States. The network has not commented on whether or not this is the final series, but rumors have persistently suggested that creator Julian Fellowes is looking to leave the show so he can develop a show for NBC in the U.S.
