Looks like Madame Web will be heading to Sony’s Spider-Man universe to join up with a recently re-acquired Peter Parker!

Fans and casual viewers alike were stunned earlier this summer when they found out that Sony would be taking back complete rights to the character of Spider-Man, meaning the young superhero who had spent nearly his entire superhero movie career being billed as the heir to Tony Stark would no longer be allowed to even be mentioned in an upcoming MCU film, much less be able to fully inherit that mantle.

MCU stans were stunned and angry, calling for a boycott of Sony, signing petitions, even trying to get a protest in front of Sony studios together. However, despite all the vitriol and angry Twitter threads denouncing Sony, they’ve gone on with their Spider-Man universe just as planned, with a high possibility of being just fine without the assistance of the MCU.

Currently, the studio has confirmed a Morbius film with Jared Leto, Venom 2 with Tom Hardy returning and Andy Serkis directing, an Into the Spider-Verse sequel, and announced a whole host of other films including Black Cat, Silver Sable and Silk.

While we don’t know quite yet what the studio plans to do with their newly re-acquired superhero star, Collider broke the news earlier today that Sony will be moving ahead a Madame Web film, which will be penned by Morbius writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

Currently, there have been two different characters to have worn the mantle of Madame Web.

The first was Cassandra Webb, usually shown as an old blind woman who suffers from a neuromuscular disease that confines her to life support machine which includes a series of tubes shaped like a spider-web. She’s a telepathic, clairvoyant, and precognitive mutant who was introduced to the Spider-Man world when she helped him find a kidnap victim.

Jessica Carpenter currently holds the mantle as the second Madame Web. She was formally the second Spider-Woman and then Arachne before Cassandra Webb transferred her abilities to Jessica. Like the first Madame Web, Jessica Carpenter often uses her clairvoyance and precognitive powers to help Peter Parker.

It’s still too early to know which version Sony’s Madame Web movie will use — or if it’ll use both of them — but there is certainly more than enough history and lore to make a pretty great movie. Hopefully we hear more soon!
