AMC is taking a page out of the Breaking Bad playbook and splitting Mad Men season 7, its final outing, into two parts.

Mad Men season 7 will air in two seven-episode halves, airing spring 2014 and spring 2015. “This approach has worked well for many programs across multiple networks, and, most recently for us with ‘Breaking Bad,’ which attracted nearly double the number of viewers to its second-half premiere than had watched any previous episode,” said AMC President Charlie Collier in a statement to The Los Angeles Times. “We are determined to bring ‘Mad Men’ a similar showcase.”

Added Mad Men creator Matt Weiner, “We plan to take advantage of this chance to have a more elaborate story told in two parts, which can resonate a little bit longer in the minds of our audience. The writers, cast and other artists welcome this unique manner of ending this unique experience.”

The final eight episodes of Breaking Bad are currently airing on AMC and nabbing record-high ratings for the series. Time will tell if Weiner is able to orchestrate a storyline for the final episodes that will engage viewers like Bad did.

Most importantly, this decision prolongs the life of the Madison Avenue drama so AMC can hold on to one of their crowning achievements for the next two years.

Over the past week, AMC has also announced Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead spinoffs.

The network has several other scripted dramas in development for their post-Bad world, including TURN and Halt and Catch Fire, but details surrounding them are unknown at this time.
