Mad Men season 6 just wrapped its two-hour premiere episode!

Now it’s time to recap, discuss with fellow fans, and get a sneak peek at next week’s story.

‘Mad Men’ season 6 premiere episode recap

On the Mad Men season 6 premiere, the story begins with Megan and Don on vacation in Hawaii during December. During a dinner, Megan is approached by a fan of a show she stars in (and apparently she’s a great actress). Unsurprisingly, it bothers Don that Megan is getting attention.

Betty gets a ticket for reckless driving while with her family, including new daughter-in-law Sandy. Don and Megan return from their trip to Hawaii and we see a flashback to when their doorman collapsed. We’re then brought back to the present, and the doorman gives Megan her latest script. Back to Betty: She’s feeling insecure about her sex life, and she’s also trying to lose weight.

Amongst rumors that Peggy wouldn’t be a prominent figure in season 6, she does indeed return. Roger is up to his usual ways and provides a lot of the comic relief in the show as you’ve come to expect. In his opening season 6 scene, he’s all about making door and path metaphors.

Roger’s mother dies, and his coworkers attend the funeral as Don continues to be depressed over Megan’s rising success. He’s apparently having such a hard time dealing with the day, he can’t handle his alcohol and throws it up. Roger takes the surprising moment to unleash anger over the fact that his ex-wife brought her new husband to the funeral.

After being brought back to his apartment still drunk, he asks the doorman what he saw when he died. The doorman doesn’t have much of an answer, but Don is clearly curious and is feeling dead inside.

Later, Betty is on the search for Sandy in a place where homeless are taking shelter. Roger has a visit from his daughter who wants to invest in a refrigeration company that can transport fruit without it going bad across the country in four days (an amazing feat for the time, kids!). She’s clearly progressive: She also encourages her father not to smoke because it’s bad for him.

Don has a meeting with his Hawaiian vacation client. The pitch starts strong, but his ideas ends up being pretty morbid – a reflection of his own state of mind in the episode. The client is taken aback by the death symbolism, but Don doesn’t see it. After the meeting, Roger reminds him that they sold Lucky Strike cigarettes for 25 years by ignoring death. It seems like Don is not able to ignore it anymore.

At the end, Betty gets her hair dyed and the kids hate it. Roger learns of another family death which makes him cry. Peggy reconnects with her boss Ted who likes her and her latest headphone campaign pitch. Don, finally, returns to his old ways and says that for the new year he wants to stop cheating.

In our opinion, the first hour of the premiere was a little flat but the second episode picked up the pace and held the Mad Men we’ve missed.
