The wait is over! AMC has finally announced the Mad Men season 6 premiere date.

AMC confirmed to TV Guide that Mad Men season 6 will return on April 7 at 9 p.m. ET with a two-part premiere before returning to its regular 10 p.m. ET slot the next week.

We were right! We’ve been saying all along that Mad Men season 6 would premiere on this date.

Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner also gave some insight on what year Mad Men season will be set in. When season 5 left off, the show was in 1967, but there will be another jump before Mad Men season 6. This puts the show in the late 1960s. Weiner had this to say:

This point has been such a great story engine for the show. I love writing that first episode as if the audience knows everything that has happened, and watching them piece it in their head. It’s an elliptical experience.

Weiner talked about how the time period Mad Men season 6 will be set in parallels the characters themselves:

I think the social environment and the general sense of anxiety and decay of that period mirrors how people feel right now. I think it’s about, whether we realize it or not, we have lost something recently, and it feels very different. There’s a bit of a self-esteem problem for the country, and it’s turned people inwards.

There had been some speculation that the show and some of its characters would be headed in separate directions, but Weiner confirms that the entire cast will back for Mad Men season 6:

I can tell you their names are in the credits. And none of the cast has been let go.

Weiner talked about the ambiguous moment at the end of season 5 where a beautiful woman comes up to Don at a bar and we don’t get to see a response:

As the season went on and Megan began to express her own desires and ambitions, it was a real blow to Don and didn’t jibe with what his fantasy of this relationship was meant to be. Maybe Megan wasn’t exciting to him once she wasn’t completely devoted to him anymore. But it ain’t over. What was interesting to me was to see that journey of us taking his relationship seriously with her, and what the reaction was from the audience.
