A new rumor indicates that George Miller is working on a Mad Max: Fury Road prequel movie, to focus on Furiosa (Charlize Theron).

It may have been a Mad Max movie, but despite Tom Hardy’s stellar performance, there’s no doubt that Charlize Theron’s Furiosa stole the show in last year’s Oscar-nominated Fury Road.

Ever since then, audiences have been clamoring for more stories about the indomitable one-armed action star, whose uncompromising badassery ushered in a new era of heroines.

And, although George Miller has previously denied reports that Furiosa would continue in future Mad Max movies, we may in fact be so lucky as to get a prequel all about the character.

Via The Mary Sue, the Australian Herald-Sun is reporting that the alleged prequel will begin filming later this year.

Writes the paper:

“The prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road starring TOM HARDY will be filmed in and around Broken Hill. Pre-production is gearing up on the multi-million-dollar action-packed Warner Bros franchise, with NSW’s Broken Hill Studios Miller’s first choice for shooting, which could start as soon as later this year. Mad Max 4 was plagued by delays when extended rain turned the desert green and the uber director had to move location to Namibia. The script is said to focus on the backstory of Furiosa, played by Oscar winner CHARLIZE THERON.”

This is very much a rumor until we hear more, but one we’re not totally disinclined to believe. After all, Furiosa’s origin story is definitely a tale worth telling, and just imagine the thrilling visuals that could accompany it!
