Mad Max: Fury Road is officially the best film of the (fiscal) year, according to the International Federation of Film Critics.

Furiosa rules the world, at least according to the International Federation of Film Critics, which voted Mad Max: Fury Road the best film of the fiscal year, which started on July 1, 2014 and ended July 1, 2015.

The 493 members of the International Federation had first been able to select their favorites, narrowing the field to Fury Road, Son of Saul, The Assassin, and Taxi, before selecting Fury Road as the winner.

Interestingly, none of the big 2015 Oscar titles like Interstellar, The Theory of Everything, Whiplash or Best Picture winner Birdman were in contention for the prestigious “Grand Prix.”

Director George Miller responded to the good news, writing, “You could have knocked me over with a feather! It’s lovely to have this great cohort of critics acknowledge our collective labors in this way.”

It’s great to see Mad Max: Fury Road honored. Miller managed to create a legitimately beautiful cinematic experience, unapologetic in its violence, and almost perfectly balancing the macho monster truck imagery with the unquestionable superiority of its female lead Furiosa, played by the incredible Charlize Theron.

Although one might hope this is a good indicator of Fury Road‘s Oscar chances, the FIPRESCI vote doesn’t always spell Hollywood success. Last year, the Grand Prix was awarded to Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, which failed to score big at the 2015 Academy Awards.

George Miller will be accepting the award at the upcoming San Sebastián Film Festival in the Basque Country.
