George Miller is bringing us a Furiousa-focused Mad Max movie, but unfortunately won’t be bringing Charlize Theron along with him.

George Miller spoke with The New York Times recently about the Mad Max movie, confirming rumors that he plans for it to be an origin film about Furiousa.

Unfortunately, given that it will take viewers back in time, Charlize Theron — who played Furiousa in Mad Max: Fury Road — won’t be back to reprise her role.

George Miller stated that he’s instead searching for an actress in her 20s to take over the role. He mentioned that he had considered using the same de-aging technology from The Irishman in order to allow 44 year old Charlize Theron to play the part again, but ultimately decided against doing so.

“For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don’t think we’re nearly there yet,” Miller stated in the interview. “Despite the valiant attempts on The Irishman, I think there’s still an uncanny valley.”

When working on the Mad Max: Fury Road script, George Miller and co-writer Nick Lathouris developed back stories for every character in the film. However, a lot of what had been written about Furiosa’s past didn’t make it in the film. All we know about her in Mad Max: Fury Road is that she is an Imperator — a war captain — under leader Immortan Joe who turns against him in order to free Joe’s concubines.

Miller has directed all four Mad Max movies, the first three which starred Mel Gibson in the titular role. Tom Hardy stepped into the role of Max Rockatansky in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury to great success, and the film was later nominated for best picture and best director.

Rumors of the next Mad Max have been circling since the success of Fury Road and Miller stated that ee plans to shoot the Furiosa movie after he completes shooting Three Thousand Years of Longing, which stars Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton.
