Lupita Nyong’o is bringing us an exciting new documentary where she searches Africa to uncover a group of highly skilled women warriors.

Lupita Nyong’o is starring in a truly exciting new documentary called Warrior Women with Lupita Nyong’o where she will journey around Benin, West Africa to uncover a group called the Agoji, or as they were known by Europeans, the Amazons. These women were highly skilled warriors who fought to defend the Kingdom of Dahomey.

As Deadline reports, these armies were filled with thousands of women who defended the Kingdom of Dahomey from the 17th to 19th century. Though many of us are familiar with the term “Amazons,” especially recently, thanks in large part to Wonder Woman and her fighting sisterhood on Themyscira, not many people know the real story behind the Agoji.

Nyong’o will help tell the stories of these amazing women in this one-off documentary, and we just can’t wait. The documentary will be headed to the British broadcaster, Channel 4.

Channel 4’s Head of Specialist Factual Fatima Salaria and Commissioning Editor, Specialist Factual Shaminder Nahal had this to say about Lupita Nyong’o and her exciting new documentary, “Lupita Nyong’o’s investigation into the real story of the all-female army is thrilling, haunting and emotional. It’s amazing the true story of these kick-ass female fighters isn’t more widely known – and in telling it, the film challenges dominant narratives about race, women and power. With some surprises along the way.”

The Creative Director of Sandstone Global, Bettany Hughes also expressed excitement in telling the story of these women, “The Agoji women were recruited by their kings across three centuries and fought in huge numbers in highly-trained battalions. Women have frequently been written out of history, and powerful women fetishized – this is a case in point. Lupita Nyong’o asks searing questions about power play in history and who tells whose story.”

It sounds like the Agoji are very similar to Marvel’s Dora Milajae, an army of special forces–made up entirely of women–who fight to protect the kingdom of Wakanda and their king, T’Challa. So we love that it is Nyong’o, one of the stars of Black Panther, who is telling the true story of the Agoji (even if she doesn’t technically play a member of the Dora Milajae in Black Panther, she still does don a Dora uniform once in the movie).

Warrior Women with Lupita Nyong’o sounds like it is going to be a fascinating journey that will tell a part of history that doesn’t normally get highlighted. We can’t wait to learn more about the brave Agoji women and how they fought to protect their home.
