Looks like Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira won’t be re-teaming for Americanah at HBO Max after all.

According to Variety, the planned series adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel, Americanah is no longer moving forward at HBO Max.

The series, which had been given a straight to series oder by the streamer back in March of 2018, had been a long time passion project of Nyong’o’s, who has long-since held the rights.

Adichie’s book tells the story of two star-crossed lovers who find themselves separated when they immigrate from Nigeria to the West, with Ifemelu heading to America int he opes that her boyfriend, Obinze might be able to join her.

Obinze finds himself unable to immigrate following the events of 9/11 and ends up starting a new life in London instead where he lives as an undocumented immigrant. The pair must then wait 15 years before they’re reunited once more.

Initially, the Oscar winner had planned to turn Americanah in to a film, before switching gears when Danai Gurira came on board to serve as writer. The accomplished actress are frequent collaborators. Black Panther aside, the duo have also teamed up on the play, Eclipsed, which was written by Gurira and starred Nyong’o.

Like many projects that have ended up getting scrapped this year, Americanah has become a casualty of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Per Variety, a source lose to the project revealed while production on the Americanah adaptation was meant to start up in early 2020, Nyong’o has since had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts that arose after initial production start dates got pushed back.

Gurira and Nyong’o, who were set to split executive producer duties, had lined up a star-studded cast to bring Americanah to life including Uzo Aduba, Corey Hawkins. Zackary Momoh, and Tireni Oyenusi.

While Americanah may not be moving forward for the time being, we’ll certainly be hoping that perhaps somewhere down the line, Nyong’o and Gurira will revisit the idea!
