Rejoice! The Lumberjanes adaptation is moving forward as the film gains its director.

Emily Carmichael is known for her short film work, but she’s soon to move into the film arena and is bound to make waves there as well. She’s already working on Powerhouse, the Steven Spielberg-produced feature, and now she’s adding Lumberjanes to the mix.

According to The Wrap, Fox has added the director to the adaptation of the comic book series, which is already highly anticipated by fans of the property.

The comic book was created by Shannon Walters, Grace Ellis, and Noelle Stevenson, and the official synopsis reads:

The story is set in and around Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types, a summer camp whose attendees are known as Lumberjane Scouts. The five scouts of the Roanoke cabin — Jo, April, Molly, Mal and Ripley — witness a mysterious old woman transforming into a bear, and after following her into the woods, encounter a hostile pack of three-eyed supernatural foxes. As more three-eyed creatures start to appear, the girls task themselves with solving the mysteries surrounding the camp.

Over the course of the story, characters earn or refer to various Lumberjane scout badges; these are added to a sash printed on the back of each issue. The characters frequently invoke the names of notable female pioneers, with phrases such as “Oh my Bessie Coleman” and “What the Joan Jett?” Each issue ends with a track listing for a mixtape prepared by one of the characters.

Lumberjanes has found a strong readership thanks to the all-female main cast of characters and the all-female authorship. The fact that Fox has added a female director to the project means they’re paying attention to what fans of the series are looking for.
