Constantine‘s lead female character, played by Lucy Griffths, will be written out of the show and replaced by another Hellblazer female character.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the True Blood alum will be leaving Constantine as a result of the showrunners deciding to move in a different direction that, apparently, did not involve her character Liv.

This is surprising because Liv was the lead female character of the show based on the Hellblazer comics. She has the ability to see demons and John Constantine must help her survive in a dangerous world of monsters.

There’s no word on when Liv will make her exit from the show and whether or not she’ll die as a result of the decision to replace her character with someone else. It certainly could make for compelling television, however, if Liv was killed and Constantine had to (once again) deal with the consequences of his actions.

According to THR, Liv’s character will not be recast with another actress. Instead, a new character named Zed, who has also shown up in the Hellblazer comics, will become the female lead. Zed is described as “a foil for the show’s title character who becomes his right-hand woman.” She will appear in an early episode and eventually replace Liv as Constantine’s partner.

Zed has not been cast yet, but news will surely be coming soon, as Constantine will be premiering on NBC later this year, on Fridays beginning October 24.

The official synopsis reads:

Based on the wildly popular comic book series “Hellblazer” from DC Comics, seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine specializes in giving hell… hell. Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit, he fights the good fight – or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he’s decided to leave his do-gooder life behind. But when demons target Liv, the daughter of one of Constantine’s oldest friends, he’s reluctantly thrust back into the fray – and he’ll do whatever it takes to save her. Before long, it’s revealed that Liv’s “second sight,” an ability to see the worlds behind our world and predict supernatural occurrences, is a threat to a mysterious new evil that’s rising in the shadows. And now it’s not just Liv who needs protection; the angels are starting to get worried too. So, together, Constantine and Liv must use her power and his skills to travel the country, find the demons that threaten our world – and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all.

From Executive Producer David S. Goyer (“Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight Rises”) and director Neil Marshall (“Game of Thrones,” “The Descent”) comes a dark new thriller that proves fighting evil is a hell of a job.

What do you think about the choice to replace the female lead on ‘Constantine’?
