Lucifer dropped a bombshell in its latest episode, “Favorite Son,” when it was revealed that Lucifer’s wings had been stolen. But who took them?

Lucifer has done a great job of lulling us into a false sense of security in regard to its cases of the week. Whilst they’ve all been loosely connected to either Chloe or Lucifer up until this point, the stakes had never really been all that high.

That all changed when a container owned by Lucifer was stolen, and he became willing to go to extreme lengths to reclaim it. But just what was in the container that was so important? Well, Lucifer’s wings, as it turned out.

Though Lucifer is back in possession of his crate, his wings are gone, and there appear to be no suspects — yet.

We decided to break down the major players in this new development, and just who might be the likeliest candidate for the theft.

Amenadiel

Amenadiel hasn’t been having much luck with his quest to restore Lucifer to Hell — despite his tentative alliance with Mazikeen. Sure, he seemed to be making a little headway by the end of “Favorite Son,” albeit via Linda Martin, but would he go so far as to steal Lucifer’s wings in order to expedite the process?

We know Amenadiel is willing to work within shades of grey, that much has already been established, though we’re less certain he’d play that dirty. Especially after the preview video for “Wingman,” which shows Amenadiel and Lucifer joining forces in order to track down his missing wings. With an ominous warning of what could happen if they fall into the wrong hands, we’re more likely to believe Amenadiel will allow a temporary truce — if only to ensure the safety of humanity.

Mazikeen

Someone who is less concerned with humanity’s safety is Lucifer’s steadfast companion, Mazikeen. We exalted her loyalty in an previous article, but as we’ve since learned, there’s more to her relationship with Lucifer than first meets the eye. Sure, she’s compelled to protect him, but we know her interpretation of just what that protection entails is pretty loose.

We can assume that, as Maze was the one that helped Lucifer to hack away at his wings, there’s some leeway to what constitutes “harm.” Thus, even if the disembodied wings are technically a part of Lucifer, Mazikeen could still be operating within her parameters of doing what is best for him by stealing them. She does believe they are both better off in Hell, after all.

But would that kind of betrayal of Lucifer be classified as harmful? We’d be inclined to believe so, especially from Lucifer’s perspective. And with the foreshadowing of Mazikeen appearing in Chloe’s house and understanding just what kind of influence she has over him, would the show squander the opportunity to explore Maze exploiting that by having her behind the theft?

Uriel

It can’t be solely a coincidence that an episode which ups the ante as dramatically as “Favorite Son” did is also the first in which we get a reference to Uriel. But what stake would Uriel have in forcing Lucifer’s hand by stealing away his wings? While we know little about him textually within the show, other than the fact he resides in the Silver City, we do have some other sources from which to take our cues.

Despite not being a major player in the Lucifer comics, Uriel does take over as representative of the Host after Amenadiel, setting some precedent for his intervening in Earthly affairs. Likewise, in the book of Enoch, Uriel was one of the Archangels who requested permission from God to intervene on humanity’s behalf against the fallen angels. Though that role was ultimately granted to Michael, there’s some documented intent that could be repurposed for the show.

With Amenadiel’s progress with reinstating Lucifer to Hell moving at a painfully slow pace, it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine a second Archangel being introduced — both to force Lucifer’s hand, and also provide a foil for Amenadiel.

Unknown Player

Of course, whoever is responsible for stealing Lucifer’s wings could ultimately be a third party we’ve yet to be introduced to — or hear reference to in passing. We’d be inclined to believe they’d be linked to the Silver City or Hell, if only because it is unlikely that a human would know about the crate, or what it really contained.

We did a little digging, and checked out the cast list for the show, just in case it threw out any additional clues. Most of the names were generic, except for one: Pandora.

It’s unlikely that this is the Pandora, but that is an oddly specific name to choose. There is also a Pandora in the DC comics universe, based on the Greek myth, and she also goes by the alias Lilith. While that’s not the same Lilith related to Mazikeen, they could be taking some liberties with their adaptation. It’d be a pretty bold move on the show’s part, and one that certainly wouldn’t be unwelcome.

Who do you think stole Lucifer’s wings?

Lucifer 1×07, “Wingman,” airs Monday, March 7 at 9 p.m. on Fox.
