With Lucifer in full swing at Fox, we look ahead at where the show could feasibly go in season 1 — and, hopefully, beyond.

Lucifer already has two episodes under its belt, and though we’re enjoying the show so far, we can’t help but look forward to where it might be heading over the course of the rest of the season. We’ve got five things we’d love to see play out — but would also work on the back-burner should the show make it to season 2.

1. A shift away from the procedural format

Don’t get us wrong, we love a good procedural drama, and the cases thus far have been tied interestingly back to our two main characters — Lucifer and Chloe. In fact, for the general audience, it has been a great way to establish the characters’ moral code and motivations.

However, with the vast lore of both Sandman and Lucifer available to draw from, there are directions they could take the show in that would set it apart from other procedural dramas out there right now. The current format would be a great way to ease audiences into a larger, escalating plot — there’s a lot more to be explored with Lucifer’s frustrations, and both Mazikeen and Amenadiel’s desire to see Lucifer reinstated to Hell.

2. More supernatural beings

With a shift away from the more procedural format, it could open the door for more demonic elements to come into play on the show. With Lucifer absconding from Hell and, unlike in the comic, there being no one currently in charge below, it should only be a matter of time before all Hell literally breaks loose. Lucifer also has a lilim in its midst in Mazikeen — a daughter of Lilith, with whom Mazikeen doesn’t exactly get along famously.

Of course, it’s not just demons that could shake up Lucifer’s comfortable life in Los Angeles. Looking to the comics, there are a few other beings close to Lucifer that might spell trouble, or make things… interesting. Particularly, Lucifer’s brother, the Angel Michael. Their powers are very specifically connected in the comics and lead to some rather explosive family drama.

3. John Constantine: Master Petty Dabbler of the Dark Arts

With the potential for demons and angels showing up on the show, it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine that Constantine would be far behind them. Constantine and Lucifer have interacted before — most notably in the Hellblazer run, “Dangerous Habits,” and they’re not exactly… friendly — so it would be very easy to imagine them clashing on the show.

There’s already a precedent set for Constantine crossing over into other properties set in the wider DC universe — and Matt Ryan is certainly still game to reprise the role. If Fox and NBC could strike a similar deal to the one that allowed John to show up on Arrow, well, things could get entertaining, to say the least.

4. The introduction of Beatrice

The show isn’t just about Lucifer, and we have a cast of supporting characters rounding things out, Mazikeen being one of the more fascinating ones. As Lucifer’s companion, and the only one to accompany him from Hell, there’s a lot of space to explore her motivations outside of her boss.

This character shouldn’t be confused with Trixie, Chloe’s daughter. Beatrice, in the comics, is a waitress at Lux — and she falls in love with Mazikeen. Whilst that love may not be returned on Mazikeen’s part, the relationship is definitely one that would be a little unconventional and interesting to explore.

But don’t just take our word for it. Lesley-Ann Brandt, Mazikeen’s actress, told us as much back at San Diego Comic-Con 2015. “I would like Beatrice,” Brandt said. “I’d love to see Mazikeen get a little lesbian action on. Have a relationship. I really like the character.”

5. A David Bowie reference

For those unfamiliar with the Sandman comics by Neil Gaiman, you might not have known that Lucifer’s look was less Tom Ellis and more David Bowie. Yes, that’s right, the Lord of Hell was styled after Bowie.

With his tragic passing earlier this year, we’d love to see some kind of tribute made to him on the show. Sure, we got a little taste of his music in the pilot, but it would be nice to see something further than that — perhaps a nod to the man himself within an episode, or an extended use of his music.

It’s not something that’d be off the table either. Speaking to Comic Book Resources, showrunner Joe Henderson mused on the possibility. “That’s a nice idea. You know what, we haven’t even thought about that. I would love to. What I don’t want to seem is like we’re being… I don’t want to seem opportunistic,” Henderson said. “He is such an inspiration, obviously, for the character. But also, his vibe to me is so much of what that character is. I think hopefully we’ll just honor him by playing his music and rocking out to it. Yeah, I don’t know. I don’t know what the right move is to be quite honest, and I want to do the right thing.”
