In the dying moments of the last episode, Lucifer changed the game for everyone with a stake in his return to Hell. Now, it’s time for him to be reborn.

With Lucifer’s wings going up in smoke, quite literally, on the previous episode, the Lord of Hell has the unprecedented opportunity to reinvent himself. But just what kind of Lucifer will we encounter during the show’s eighth episode? The same old, smooth-talking, self-interested bar owner? Or will he shake things up a little?

Well, judging by the brief promotional video for “Et Tu, Doctor?” we may be seeing a bit of both. With a glitzy party underway at Lux, no doubt to celebrate his recently severed ties to all things heavenly and below, his indulgent nature is still front and center. As is his more dangerous edge, as he corners another person on a rooftop — and, really, you’d have thought Lucifer might have learnt his lesson about that by now? No such luck, however.

But, as he points out to Chloe, he has layers. Like an onion.

There’s just one problem with that, when you start peeling away at those layers, there’s no way to put them back. Lucifer may brush Linda off when she points out that his barriers are coming down, but each episode is inching closer to the heart of Lucifer’s issues — be that with predestination, or his fraught relationship with his father.

Speaking of his father, Lucifer appears to visit a church in this episode. We’re not counting this as a change of heart, of course, but it’s likely he could be testing the limits of God’s hold over him — especially in the wake of burning his last semblance of a connection to his former life. Or so he thinks. Mazikeen has a little insurance in one single feather, which we imagine will come into play before the season’s end.

Lucifer isn’t the only one having to face their past, as the synopsis also teases some further developments in the Palmetto case, after Malcolm was saved by Amenadiel on the previous episode — though to what end, we’re not certain. It’s likely that Amenadiel will use it as a bargaining chip, either to enlist Chloe’s help, or force Lucifer into cooperating.

The synopsis reads, “When a therapist is murdered, Lucifer and Chloe enlist the help of Dr. Linda to look into possible suspects. Meanwhile, Malcolm confronts Chloe about the night he was shot, and Lucifer experiences his first bout of jealousy.”

We may just learn the true unfolding of events on that fateful night that Malcolm was shot, and get closer to learning just how far the corruption in the system goes. As for Lucifer’s jealousy? Well, with his burgeoning mortality, it was only a matter of time before he started to experience some more human emotions — but what will he be jealous of? We’re placing our bets on it having something to do with Chloe, and her redeveloping relationship with her estranged husband (even if it’s strictly professional, so far, on their parts).

Lucifer 1×08, “Et Tu, Doctor?” airs March 14, at 9 p.m. on Fox.
