With The Vampire Diaries on its way out, it only makes sense to bring in The Lost Boys, right?

And who better to helm that project than someone like Rob Thomas, who’s already got connections to the dead on The CW thanks to iZombie?

Deadline is reporting the news that the horror/comedy film’s reboot will be going to series and is being written by Thomas himself.

The scope of the project is apparently going to be huge, with Deadline also stating that the Veronica Mars creator has envisioned it as a seven-season run spanning a total of 70 years. Everything from the supporting human cast to the setting to the villains will change throughout the series, but the Lost Boys will always stay the same.

Season 1 will take place in San Francisco in the year 1967.

If you’re unfamiliar with the original cult classic film, the synopsis and trailer are below:

Teenage brothers Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim) move with their mother (Dianne Wiest) to a small town in northern California. While the younger Sam meets a pair of kindred spirits in geeky comic-book nerds Edward (Corey Feldman) and Alan (Jamison Newlander), the angst-ridden Michael soon falls for Star (Jami Gertz) — who turns out to be in thrall to David (Kiefer Sutherland), leader of a local gang of vampires. Sam and his new friends must save Michael and Star from the undead.

It’ll be interesting to see how fans react to the idea of a reboot. As of right now, reboots are all the rage for the studios, but audiences are beginning to feel burned out by frequent remakes.

The Lost Boys is a cult classic and beloved movie, but also suffers from being a product of its time, having been made in 1987. A reboot could certainly offer a sleek new look at the property while perhaps also setting itself apart from other vampire shows that have come before it, like Vampire Diaries and True Blood.
