Letters have been removed from the gravestone of a man named Thomas Riddell after Harry Potter fans confused the man with Lord Voldemort.

Thomas Riddell was a general who died in 1806 at the age of 72. He was buried at the Edinburgh graveyard Greyfriers Kirkyard nearly two centuries ago, but Potter fans have been leaving letters as if he was in the Battle of Hogwarts found in Deathly Hallows.

An Edinburgh City Council member said in a statement to the BBC, “In order to preserve the appearance of this historic graveyard and out of respect to the family, items left by this headstone are regularly removed.”

A photo of the grave, below, shows Riddell was buried at this site with other members of his family:

Rowling famously penned the first book in the Harry Potter series at an Edinburgh cafe, and the BBC notes that Thomas Riddell’s name may have inspired the author. This is the only reason we can muster as to why fans would decide to leave letters here.

We’re also wondering what those letters to Voldemort said. They couldn’t have been very nice.

Voldemort died during the seventh and final Harry Potter book after Harry managed to destroy all of the Horcruxes which were keeping The Dark Lord alive.
