A Lord of the Rings inspired theme park titled The Shire is opening in Spain! ¡Ay, caramba!

Are you looking for someone to share in an adventure?

This is every Tolkien fan’s biggest dream come true… sort of. The Spanish town of Rincon de la Victoria has announced that it will be building a theme park inspired by the Middle Earth haven The Shire.

The Shire is obviously an important part of both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, as it is the home of the Hobbits (including Bilbo and Frodo).

The 20-acre theme park, which will cost 1.7 million Euro (2 million dollars) to construct, it titled “La Comarca.” This roughly translates to “The Shire.”

20 acres isn’t that much, and we can’t help but question the location. We’re sure the people of Spain are excited about this, but it’s not exactly the country we’d first associate with Tolkien’s world.

This theme park sounds like it’d be more at home in Britain… or, say, New Zealand, where there’s already an established Shire location (built for Peter Jackson’s original trilogy, and maintained by the owner of the land).

Also note that “theme park” should be taken very literally – it’ll pretty must just be a themed park, but with hobbit holes.

The Mayor of Rincon de la Victoria said in a statement:

“The Shire will become one of the major tourism attractions of our town. The material will have a very low environmental impact, to create an integrated image in nature. It will be a place in which family leisure, sports and nature will go hand-in-hand in a unique space of great beauty set in a time of fairy tales and the magic of the elves. Without a doubt, Rincon de la Victoria will have a top-rated tourist attraction, which will also add to the variety of attractions of Malaga.”

However, this still sounds like a great little place, which will be worth a visit if you’re ever in the area.
