Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series has officially cast its main baddie, and while details are sparse, we are incredibly excited!

Amazon has officially chosen the actor who will portray the main villain on its upcoming Lord of the Rings series. Joseph Mawle has been tapped to join the show as the big bad.

The Hollywood Reporter first broke this news, but naturally, Amazon hasn’t released a comment regarding the casting.

However, THR believes that Mawle’s character will be named Oren.

While we don’t know much about Mawle’s Lord of the Rings character, we do know that he’s got the acting chops to pull it off. Mawle has appeared in shows like Ripper Street, and more recently portrayed Benjen Stark on Game of Thrones.

Mawle will be joining other cast members in Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, like Will Poulter and Markella Kavenagh. For now, most details surrounding the series are quite under wraps, but we do know that Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom‘s J.A. Bayona is set to direct the first two episodes.

Though details surrounding the specifics of the Lord of the Rings series are sparse, we do know that the show will be set in Middle Earth during the Second Age. For those who need to brush up on their Middle Earth history, that is set over 3,000 years prior to the events in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

While Mawle will be representing the side of evil in the new Amazon show, Will Poulter is reportedly going to be playing one of the show’s leads. And after watching him in shows like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, we know Poulter more than has the acting chops to square off against Joseph Mawle.

The Lord of the Rings series cast is rounding out quite nicely, and we can’t wait to hear more about this exciting new show. Production reportedly begins in 2020, so there will likely be much more official news about the show in the coming year.
