The classic story of Lord of the Flies will be getting the big screen treatment, with two major names attached to adapt the story from book to screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, who first broke the news, Patrick Ness is currently in negotiations to adapt Lord of Flies into a feature film, with Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino on board to helm the adaptation and produce with producing partner Marco Morabito.

Warner Bros. previously announced in 2017 that it was going to develop a female-fronted version of Lord of the Flies , but has since changed direction and decided to aim for a more traditional adaption to the famous novel.

Read by many children throughout their K-12 education, Lord of the Flies is author William Golding’s story of a group of British boys who are stranded on a deserted jungle island. Lord of the Flies follows the group of survivors as they split into two groups, one led by Ralph and one led by Jack. Though Ralph’s group tries to maintain some semblance of order, Jack’s slowly falls into savagery and violence.

The story is a dark allegory about human nature, one which has been adapted multiple times and been the subject of both homage and spoof, as with The Simpsons episode, “Das Bus.”

Patrick Ness is a highly acclaimed author, having twice won the Carnegie Medal, which recognizes literary work for children and young adults, for Monsters of Men, his third book in the Chaos Walking trilogy, and A Monster Calls. Both stories focused on young adults and children facing impossibly adult situations and forced to take on unbearable burdens.

Ness wrote the screenplay for the 2016 film version of A Monster Calls, which starred Lewis MacDougall, Felicity Jones, Sigourney Weaver and Liam Neeson. He likewise worked on Lionsgate’s upcoming adaptation of Chaos Walking, which stars Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley, and has finally set a 2021 premiere date after having finished filming all the way back in 2017.
