HBO welcomes back Looking this January. In a new featurette the stars and creators preview what audiences can expect to see.

New characters, new locations, same core story. Looking returns for its second season on HBO this January with an exciting array of story lines. The core of the show remains focused on the relationship between Patrick (Jonathan Groff), Dom (Murray Bartlett), and Agustîn (Frankie J. Alvarez). As director and executive producer Andrew Haigh puts it, the first season is all about figuring out what the show is going to be. The second season will get to the heart of these characters.

Michael Lannan, creator, comments that it was a challenge to keep the intimacy of season 1 relevant amidst the new characters. The cast, on the other hand, seems unfazed by the ambitious direction season 2 is heading. Expect to see much more of Doris (Lauren Weedman) as she is set to play a larger role in the story this season, much to Bartlett’s excitement.

On another note, Patrick’s problems follow him into season 2 as both Kevin (Russell Tovey) and Richie (Raul Castillo) appear on screen. Tovey, noticeably more present since his bump to series regular after last season, remarks that the stories will have much more riding on them this season.

Relationships aside, Patrick, Dom, and Agustîn will open the season apart from their daily world, reminding viewers where the heart of the show lies. Haight comments on the first episode saying, “All of them have been in flux since the end of the last season, and they’ve all been doing their own thing a little bit. This first episode is them being determined to spend more time together and go away to Russian River, which is, like, two hours outside San Francisco. It’s this really beautiful, tranquil place along the redwoods.” But there’s no guarantee of smooth sailing. They get outdoors. They go canoeing. Things happen.”
