Looking season 2, episode 7, “Looking for a Plot,” sends Dom and Doris back home. Find out what we learn about the friends’ past in our recap.

It’s no secret that we wish Looking had a bit more going on this season. Unsurprisingly, the episode entitled, “Looking for a Plot,” focuses on two fan favorites, Dom and Doris, taking a trip back home to attend the funeral of Doris’ father.

“Doris and Dom 4eva” is probably carved in a few trees across Modesto, CA. The friends dated for seemingly an eternity back when there was nothing to do but break into pools and go to the mall. Doris’ dad was a huge Dom fan, even offering to pay for the ring to get Dom in the family.

The episode was almost a way for Dom and Doris to try out their own spinoff, but Patrick inserts himself to others’ tragedies to avoid the reality of his own life. Instead of offering a comforting shoulder, Patrick attempts to play, “whose childhood was worse.” Doris takes the lead early on describing her trips with her dad to avoid her alcoholic mother.

Before they check in at the local Clarion Inn, they stop by the funeral home to pay her dad a visit. As they stand over the body, Dom lightens the mood, reminiscing about the thumbs up her dad gave when he caught them making out. Dom takes the group on another sad stroll down memory lane. A doughnut shop now stands in the place that once housed Dom’s father’s Portuguese diner. Yet again, Patrick takes the moment and spins it into his sad childhood memory of eating glazed doughnuts and reading OUT Magazine in the pages of a Sports Illustrated.

But enough emotions for one day, with a full day of family and sympathy tomorrow, Doris and the boys hit up the only gay bar in town. Patrick projects another sad tale on lonely boy at the end of the bar. Dom and Doris head off the dance, while Patrick picks up another round contemplating making a move on the fellow down the bar. But even Patrick’s sad projections have a happier ending than he does as the boy’s boyfriend slides in next to him. On the dance floor everyone abandons their concerns for the day and the future for just a few minutes.

The next morning Aunt Sarah delivers a moving eulogy that focuses on Doris. Her father was always present, always loving, and thought the world of the his daughter from the moment she was born until she moved away to San Francisco. When she moves to the words of Walt Whitman, Patrick sobs loudly and uncontrollably in the background. We now know why Patrick is there and we are grateful for the break he provides from the gravity of the episode.

Before the group heads back to San Francisco, they have one final mission- find Dom’s father’s grave. But looking for the plot becomes an impossible mission. Just as Dom is about to give up, Patrick comes up with an idea for his friend to come out to his father. They drive around the cemetery yelling out the window that Dom is gay only to be sideswiped by a truck.

In the hospital waiting for Patrick to emerge, Doris offers Dom a huge gift. Her father left her some money in his will and it is enough for Dom’s chicken window. He may not be the current love of her life, but investing in her family seems like the right thing to do.

Doris may not have asked Malik to attend the funeral, but he is the first person who lets her drop her brave face and have a good cry.

Before the show could be completely about Dom and Doris, Patrick arrives home, arm in a sling, to find Kevin waiting for him on the stoop. He has some rather big news as well. John is gone.
