Ice cream helps fill in the cracks of Patrick and Richie’s relationship on tonight’s Looking season 2, episode 4, “Looking for Truth.”

Richie’s backstory is not one viewers were privy to during most of the first season. Looking does a good job at giving viewers just enough information at a time to resist the urge to want more from the past at any given moment. But tonight’s episode took us on a BART ride to Richie’s hometown and offered an insightful look to a community outside of the city.

A huge success at work leads to a drunken midday office party, but Patrick is not in the mood for revelry despite Kevin’s plea for him to stay. Patrick finally seems in control of his emotions this week, opening the episode with a strong counter attack at Kevin. No sad puppy eyes, no crying, just a brick wall.

Refreshing as this change in Patrick may be, old habits die hard. Patrick takes a gander at Richie’s Facebook page and responds to a public request for help moving a truck from Richie’s hometown back to the city. After all, that’s what a good friend would do, right?

Once Patrick’s ulterior motive, to have a first hand look at Richie’s past, is declared they make their way to the suburbs. Patrick asks about Brady’s status in Richie’s life, which is met sharply with the response that Richie is not declaring anything too soon this time around. Patrick opens up about ending things with Kevin. It was finally time for Patrick to see what everyone else already knew; Kevin and his lies would never be able to make Patrick a priority.

Kevin is clearly struggling with the breakup. Instead of moping alone in his office, he calls up Jon to stop by and join him. Since Patrick is MIA for the day, Kevin finally allows him to see the group of nerds he looks out on from his glass tower. But Jon is not confined to the glass case and wants to join the fun, which is probably best to jumpstart Kevin’s mood.

Agustîn’s storyline is short and sweet. He pays Eddie a visit with soup to discover that his “sick day,” is actually a hooky day and they end up smoking, chatting about life, and dancing. Oh, and fooling around. Because we all knew that was coming.

Richie’s family may not be homophobic, but their opinions of Patrick are very polarized. The boy who shattered Richie’s heart is not exactly welcomed with open arms, but dragged through the dirt and rewarded with a beer for his brave smile in the face of it all. First comes Richie’s cousin Ceci, who opens by exclaiming that Patrick is the “gringo who broke your heart.” After passing her tests, she spills the news that she was always rooting for Patrick. Richie even borrowed money to get the suit for his sister’s wedding. Twist the Richie knife a little harder.

The rest of the relatives are not so inviting. Another run in forces Richie into a conversation about his father that he’d rather not address, but that Patrick seems all too eager to push on him. Speaking of eager, Patrick wastes no time spilling all the details of the past few months. From sleeping with Kevin the night they broke up, to admitting that he was not entirely ready for the amount of love Richie had to give, Patrick lays it all out in the open. It is clear that neither of them wants to lose the other. Friendship, for now, is the best they can do.
