Looking, HBO’s newest addition to the Sunday night line up, premieres tonight! Get acquainted with the characters and preview the episode below!

Looking season 1, episode 1 “Looking for Now” premieres tonight. Although set in the time slot immediately following Girls, HBO’s latest series Looking is an entirely different show. On the surface a show shadowing the lives of gay men in San Francisco may seem to be a mirror image of the ladies in Brooklyn. However, Looking‘s characters explore a range of ages, occupations and lifestyles that the setting allows.

Patrick (Jonathan Groff), Agustin (Frankie J. Alvarez), and Dom (Murray Bartlett), are a group of friends each determining which path is right for them. Mainly through trial and error. Working through exes, dead end jobs, and the courting games of online interaction, each storyline tackles larger issues without seeming too preachy.

In the latest trailer for the series, one line sticks out that may lay out the trajectory for the season: “I don’t think either of us are really good at saying who we are. I think we need to try a little bit harder.”

Looking breaks the generational genre by mixing in characters of all ages. The issues, however, are the same across all lines. What are we trying to do and are we actually taking the steps to do that thing? Anyone can say they are an artist, but sitting on the couch watching Netflix looking at a canvas is not going to advance that identity.
