Looking season 1, episode 5 takes us on a tour of San Francisco as Richie and Patrick become better acquainted. Catch up with our full recap!

This week on Looking, Patrick and Richie take a day from work to get to know each other better. Much better.

Parting is such sweet sorrow: Patrick wakes up at Richie’s place and sneaks off to shower. Upon his return, Richie greets him with a bass solo serenade. To prevent this recap from becoming “Hypable After Dark” let’s just say Patrick and Richie take a bit longer getting out of bed.

After they collect themselves, Patrick and Richie have breakfast before Patrick threatens to run off to work one final time. As the pair walk down the street and Patrick marvels at how much they are learning about each other, Patrick decides to call out of work.

Seeing the sites: Giving up all control of the day, Patrick tells Richie to pick anywhere he wants to go. On the MUNI ride out to their location, Patrick explains how he lost his virginity at 15 on a bus ride home from computer camp. He was happy that it happened at the Colorado-Utah border, so that his first sexual act did not happen in his home state.

As they walk towards their destination, Patrick admits that he is not good with silence, a trait that causes a problem with some people. Richie does not seem to mind. They end up at the planetarium where Richie compares their date to that of Ross and Rachel’s in the early years of Friends. In the dark intimate setting, they discuss sexual preferences and what they reveal about their lives.

How do you like your eggs? After the planetarium, Patrick and Richie share hotdogs and discuss their parents’ reactions to their coming out. Patrick told his mother in the car one day, while Richie’s caught him in the act with an older family friend. Both families were fine with the news after some time to process. Patrick still holds a fear of bringing someone home to meet his family. Even if he did have anyone in his life to take home, he assumes that they would only think about what that person does to their son in a bedroom and not approve.

Richie reveals that he goes to see a woman called the Señora. Likened to a psychic, if you pay $50 and bring your own eggs, this woman will rub the eggs over your body, cracks them into bowl, and read the yolks. Patrick has a hard time swallowing this part of Richie and tries to ease his disapproval by asking if the eggs need to be organic. On a more serious note, he also asks how he can trust the information she gives Richie. How could he let someone else dictate how he will go about his life. Richie knows that Patrick may not understand it, but the woman does not control his life, but rather brings him peace.

In new Patrick fashion, he goes with Richie to see the Señora. The have to leave before ever stepping foot inside her back room. Not due to Patrick’s nerves, but because he can only count to 13 and say “the pencil sharpener is red” in Spanish.

Back where we began: Patrick and Richie both agree that their day was fruitful in more ways than one. Patrick’s trust and comfort with Richie is growing. But how will it fair outside of their private bubble?

This was a rather slow paced episode this week, but shows that Patrick is trying to make some improvements in his personal life. His relationship with Richie is important not only for him on a sexually satisfying level, but in an emotional development capacity. It will be interesting to see what comes of Richie meeting the rest of the gang next week at Dom’s birthday party!
