Smash has booked Liza Minnelli to star as herself in the upcoming second season of NBC’s musical drama.

The Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award winner will star in an episode entitled “The Surprise Party” airing in late spring of 2013. She will perform an original song with Christian Borle, who plays Tom.

“Liza Minnelli is the essence of a multi-talented, singular show business sensation, particularly for her extraordinary contributions to Broadway,” said NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt in a statement. “So what could be more fitting than to have her legendary talent on a show that celebrates a world Liza has dazzled for decades?”

The daughter of Judy Garland, of The Wizard of Oz fame, Minnelli is known for her roles in Cabaret, Arthur and New York, New York.

The second season of Smash will see several new faces, including Idol alum Jennifer Hudson, Will and Grace‘s Sean Hayes and Rent‘s Daphne Rubin-Vega and Jessie L. Martin in guest roles. Jeremy Jordan (Newsies), Krysta Rodriguez (The Addams Family) and Andy Mientus (touring company of Spring Awakening) will join the cast as regulars, while Raza Jaffrey (Dev), Jaimie Cepero (Ellis), Will Chase (Michael Swift) and Brian d’Arcy James (Frank) will not be returning as regulars.

Smash returns Feb. 5 with a two-hour episode.
